Gunns' Environmental Initiatives

Environmental Management System

An Environmental Management System (EMS) focuses on the management of all practices which have the potential to impact on the environment. Environmental aspects of Gunns' business activities are for example, harvesting, water run-off and waste disposal.

To demonstrate a commitment to operating its business in a responsible manner by adopting environmentally sound and sustainable practices, Gunns began implementing an EMS in 1999.

International Standard ISO 14001:2004 was chosen by Gunns because of its consistency with the company’s quality standard (ISO 9001). As at December 2003, all of Gunns' locations are certified to ISO 14001.

Western Australia's publicly-owned forests are managed by the Western Australian Government agency, the Department of Environment and Convervation (DEC) and the department responsible for forest harvesting operations is the Forest Products Commission (FPC). The FPC gained certification to ISO 14001 in July 2001 and the Western Australian Government is committed to the DEC gaining certification.

The FPC’s system, which incorporates its native forest and plantation operations, is an essential part of demonstrating that Gunns products have been produced from environmentally responsible operations. Once the DEC gain certification, it will complete the "chain of custody: from grower to producer to distributor.

Australian Forestry Standard

The Western Australian State Government is committed to pursuing certification under the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS).

The AFS is controlled by Standards Australia, which is the national body for setting standards in Australia and has mutual recognition with the Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Unique KilnValue Adding

Value adding is the driving force that has seen more than $30 million invested in plant and equipment, technology and training.

The company kiln dries more than 85 per cent of the sawn jarrah output for subsequent processing into seasoned decorative products.

National Pollutant Inventory

Under relevant Western Australian and Commonwealth National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) laws, if a facility triggers one or more reporting thresholds for NPI substances, then the facility must estimate emissions for each substance triggered and report those emissions to the NPI.

The National Pollutant Inventory is an internet database designed to provide the community, industry and government with information on the types and amounts of certain substances being emitted to the environment.

Through the NPI, the community, industry and governments will have access to consistent and reliable information about pollutant emissions in Australia.  The NPI is designed to satisfy community demand for this information and increase understanding of the relative environmental impact of local industry and everyday activities.

Gunns reports its estimated emissions to the NPI and to review the database, please visit www.environment.gov.au.
